Something so minor as losing weight can actually serve as a stepping-stone to accomplishing something even greater in your life.
According to the polls within the United States and around the World, the number one New Year’s resolution is still losing weight.
As a result, we make all these resolutions, but we don’t seem to put much faith in our ability to carry them out. Part of the reason is because we don’t fully understand the power of a completed resolution.
The word “Resolutions” plainly articulates itself in the American Heritage Dictionary as: 1. The state or quality of being resolute; firm determination. 2. A resolving to do something. 3. A course of action determined or decided on.
Perhaps a better way to describe a resolution is to think of it as a decision, or the ability to make up one’s mind and carry out one’s intentions.
I like to say it like this: A resolution is something I do on purpose for a purpose.
The Ultimate Resolution
When one thinks of a resolution in that manner, one can only explain the lifestyle of the Cross (and the Resurrection) as a resolution resolved!
Christ was resolute in His thinking, determined in fulfillment, and took the necessary course of action to accomplish what He decided to do.
When one of us makes a decision to address an issue in our life such as losing weight, eating properly, or walking in love at all times—and then forfeits that resolution—it begins to build short-term losses instead of short-term victories.
Of course, an event such as death on the cross was no short-term victory. Yet losing weight is. (What took 30 years to put on will only take you a fraction of the time to take off.)
What’s important to remember is that something so minor as losing weight can actually serve as a stepping-stone to accomplishing something even greater in your life.
That’s why your short-term goals and victories are so important. You may not even know what future victories lay ahead of you at this point, but the King does, and He will help guide your steps and decisions.
Setting and pursuing goals is a wonderful thing. However, if we never fulfill our goals, the internal driving force of our soul will never reach its fullest potential.

Don’t Wait For January To Start
One thing is for sure: You’ll never experience a victory if you don’t begin the journey. The problem with most people is that they wait until January 1 of each year to finally listen to God (and their conscience) before they get serious about fulfilling their resolutions.
I’ve got news for you…God doesn’t want you to wait until January to carry out your resolutions. He wants you to begin the day He delivers the message to you. How does he do that?
For an example, I’d like to use your health as an example. Let’s look back on this past year and consider some the ways God may have tried to speak to you about improving your health:
- In February you went to see the doctor and he or she said it was time to start exercising.
- Unfortunately, in March a friend, relative, or general acquaintance experienced a massive heart attack. (Obviously, God doesn’t cause people to have heart attacks, but He can certainly use those opportunities to speak to the rest of us about how we are taking care of our own “temples” of the Holy Spirit.)
- In April, you heard a sermon preached from Philippians 3:18-19, where Paul says (among other things) that those whose God is their belly are enemies of the cross.
- Then in May, the hotel front desk manager asked if you wanted to use the fitness center during your stay.
- In June, an ad for a free gym membership got hung on your refrigerator door.
- In July, your friend just hired a personal trainer and told you all about it.
- In August, you had to walk by the health and fitness section in the local bookstore in order to get to where the Bibles were kept.
- In September you purposely refused to weigh yourself.
- In October you refused to go for a walk with your spouse; unfortunately, you had no higher revelation of the blessing that was awaiting you.
- In November, you felt guilty because you know you ate more than was necessary during the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
These are just a few examples of how God can speak to us. However, more than getting the message, He wants us to get the revelation of how our smaller efforts can help prepare us for even larger victories.
The day revelation knowledge comes is the day we need to take action. Make the decision then to set out on your journey in order to reach your goal…don’t wait after until the first of the year to begin!
By doing so, you will carry a year’s worth of smaller victories into the New Year—victories that will help you obtain and achieve even greater goals throughout the following year.
Resolve to manage your resolutions in this manner and you’ll be amazed at your ability to carry out your intentions. Remember, you can do all things through Christ Who gives you strength!
