“He stretches out the north over empty space…” (Job 26:7 NKJ).
It has been conjectured that in our universe there is an area to the north of our earth in which there are no stars, planets, or other heavenly bodies. It is supposed to be sort of a void, an empty nothingness.
Along with this “empty north” verse in Job, there is a statement in Isaiah 14:13 about Lucifer aspiring to sit in control “…on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north” (NKJ).
Apparently the Lord announced in the dawn of time that the north was designed with something special in mind. Made empty on purpose, it was destined to be filled with a congregation of worshippers.
In Psalm 48:2, Mount Zion is identified as being “…on the sides of the north….” (NKJ). Zion is always symbolic of the place where true worshippers gather together to celebrate the Lord’s name.
John the revelator saw something that could be fulfillment of these verses. In Revelation 21:2 he writes: “Then I, John, saw the holy city. New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (NKJ).
Here we have the potential for full drama:
1) At creation God deliberately leaves a square slot in the universe with nothing in it.
2) He announces that this space is reserved for a future bride for His Son.
This bride will be a large number of people. They will make up the congregation in the mount on the farthest sides of the north. The empty north will soon be occupied. The void place will be filled in with the redeemed. This is the true dignity and destiny God offers to the human race!
