The Protective Power of the Blood

by Larry Ollison | The Cutting Edge

Let me show you how the blood of the lamb protected the Hebrews before Jesus came to earth. It is found in Exodus 12:21:

Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Pick out and take lambs for yourselves according to your families, and kill the Passover lamb. And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning. For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you” (Ex. 12:21-23).

That was the protective power of the lamb. Everything that happened in the Old Testament was a foreshadowing of what was to come for us under the New Covenant. “And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever” (Ex. 12:24).

The God-fearing Jews of today still observe the Passover. They commemorate the Lord because the death angel passed over their ancestors.

How many of you would like to have the destroyer stay outside the walls of your home? The blood of Jesus protects the Christian today. Jesus said He didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it (Matt. 5:17).

God has not changed. Jesus has not changed. And the same things He did then, He does now (Mal. 3:6). He is just doing them better now because we have a new covenant. “And for this reason He [Jesus] is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance” (Heb. 9:15).

The Israelites had the blood of bulls and goats that covered their sin for a short period of time. But as believers, we have the blood of Jesus that eradicates our sin once and for all.

Revelation 12:9 says, “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down'” (Rev. 12:9-10).

Notice that this scripture uses the past tense; the devil “has been cast down.”

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death” (Rev. 12:11).

We overcome the devil, also known as Satan by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony.

Now this scripture tells me that the word of our testimony is not the blood of the Lamb. There is a difference between the Word of God, our testimony, and the blood.

We access the blood by doing the same thing they did in Old Testament. We have to apply it. But under the New Testament, we apply it with the words of our mouths. The scripture says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” (Prov. 18:21).

That means your life and your death are in the power of your tongue! We must be careful that our words line up with the Word of God. We access the throne of God with our words. What is prayer? Prayer is our words accessing the throne of God.
