“I am the Lord, I do not change…” (Mal. 3:6 NKJ).
This is an encouraging word for those seeking stability in a changing world.
In the creation, God set up the succeeding seasons, the alteration of day and night, the incoming and outgoing tides. He placed man in a world in which the sun rises at a different time every single day and sets at a different time each evening.
One Constant
Life is so filled with activity that we must constantly adjust, adapt, and accommodate ourselves to changing situations – even in nature. Behind all this ceaseless motion, there is one constant: God.
Whatever may be going on about us, we can always know that He is the same, day in and day out. He can be depended on. He does not change. He is not fickle. He is not moody. He does not feel good about us one day and bad the next. His love is always steadily on course.
This verse can be especially helpful when we find ourselves in situations that seem rather shaky. We speak about having to walk on eggshells, tread on thin ice, or build on shifting sands. That kind of feeling does not give us much of a sense of stability.
The Scriptures liken the Lord to a rock. A rock is stable. It will be there after the storm has passed. Rain doesn’t wash it away, lightning doesn’t move it. This promise from our Creator, “I am the Lord, I change not,” tells us that day after day He is “on the job.”
He never takes vacations, days off, or leaves-of-absence. Anytime, anywhere, under any circumstance, we can breathe His name and be assured of an instant audience with Him. What an encouragement to know that the Lord Who watches over His people neither slumbers nor sleeps (Ps. 121:4).
