Over the years I’ve had the chance to travel quite a bit and to talk to many different people. And I’ve discovered that there are a lot of insecure folks – even Christians – in the world today. But of all people, Christians should be the ones who are the most confident and established.
I like what David said in Psalm 26:1 and 2. He said,”…I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind” (NIV).
That’s a pretty strong claim. As a rule, if you’re not really up to par, you don’t want anyone to examine you too closely, let alone God. But David invited God to explore his claims. He said, “Here I am. Examine me!”
Now some people boast about themselves simply because way down, deep inside, they’re really insecure. They feel inadequate. So they try to compensate by being very vocal. And most of the time, they’re not telling the truth.
But I want you to notice that Psalm 26:1 and 2 aren’t the boastful words of a weak, insecure man. They’re the statements of a person who is genuinely secure in who he is and what he is! Notice that David’s security wasn’t in and of himself; his security was in the Lord! David wasn’t boasting in himself; he was boasting in the Lord. He said, “…I have trusted in the Lord without wavering…. I walk continually in your truth” (vv. 1,3 NIV).
That’s a real key that you and I can pick up on: To walk in the way of truth is to walk in security; but to walk in the way of wavering is to walk in insecurity.
In other words, you’ve got to come to the place in trusting God that you determine, “No matter what I get hit with in life, I’m going to scramble back to my feet. And no matter what happens, I’m not going to waver from the truth of God’s Word!”
You see, it’s the insecure and defeated who stay down when they get knocked off their feet. But the secure get back up and keep going because they know that as long as they stay in the fight, they’re going to win!
You might say, “Yeah, but you don’t know what I’ve been going through. You don’t know all the trials and tribulations I’ve been facing.”
No, but the Word says that if you’ll trust God, you won’t be moved or shaken. If you’ll put all your trust in Him, you can take refuge under the shadow of His wings until every calamity has passed (Ps. 21:7; 57:1)!
Friend, you do not have to be like others who are wavering, unsure of who they are and what they’re doing. That’s what the devil wants you to believe so he can keep you feeling inept and insecure. But when he comes to you with those lies, don’t whine and whimper and go around making excuses. Just stand your ground, and tell the devil to flee in Jesus’ Name.
Then lift up your voice and start praising the Lord – because you know where your security lies. You’re trusting in the Word of God, the eternal Rock. And there is absolutely no greater security than that!
