When the name Jezebel is mentioned, many people think of a woman who wears far too much make-up, tight-fitting clothes and every piece of jewelry that she owns.
The real-life story behind the name begins in 1 Kings 16. There, we learn of a wicked woman who married Ahab, king of Israel. Through her ungodly influence, her husband and the nation of Israel forsook their worship of God and began to follow after Baal.
Today, Jezebel refers to a demonic spirit that tries to manipulate and control others.
Satan is no respecter of gender and will operate through anyone, male or female, who gives him the opportunity (1 Kings 21:25).
We sometimes see this spirit in operation on our jobs. An individual may misuse his or her authority to intimidate other co-workers to accomplish a hidden agenda. If a person doesn’t hold a supervisory position of some sort, he or she will rebel by stepping outside of the boundaries in which they were instructed to operate.
This spirit is able to manifest when a person begins to operate in idolatry. An idol is anything that ranks higher in importance than God. It is defined as having an excessive attachment to something. This can be a relationship, job, home, etc.
Rejection is often the pathway that this spirit uses to gain entrance into a person’s life. Meditating on past, unhealed relationships encourages the individual to operate in strife, bitterness and unforgiveness. They then take revenge on those around them.
Yielding to the spirit of Jezebel is an act of the will. Don’t allow it to gain a foothold in your life. It will ultimately destroy you and your family. By keeping your focus on the Lord and making Him the center of your life you will ensure that it doesn’t seduce and control you.
If you recognize this spirit in another person, keep in mind that a dominating spirit can only control you if you allow it to. You have the authority to overcome any demonic influence by attacking it in the spirit realm.
This is done by applying the blood of Jesus to the situation, speaking the Word over the circumstance and interceding in the Spirit.
It is important to judge yourself to keep the Jezebel spirit from operating in your life. By yielding yourself to God and His Word, you will ultimately fulfill His will for your life.
