Who are the sons of God mentioned in Genesis 6:2?
Genesis 6 states,
Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
(Gen. 6:1-2 NKJV)
In the Old Testament the phrase “sons of God” always refers to angels. (Although it should be noted that these supernatural beings in Genesis 6:2 were no longer godly in character.)
The book of Job also refers to angels as “sons of God” in Job 1:6 (NKJV): “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them” (also note Job 2:1).
The LORD refers to Jehovah God. We know that He dwells in Heaven and is a spiritual being. Satan is the devil. Consequently, we can surmise that this is taking place in Heaven. As a result, we know that the sons of God weren’t human but were spiritual beings.
We have no biblical record of any other created beings, except the creatures mentioned in Ezekiel (Ez. 1:1-19), and angels. Angels always surround the throne of God.
In Job 38:1-7, as the Lord speaks to Job, He says that the sons of God were in existence at the time He laid the foundation of the earth. This is another reason why I’m convinced that the “sons of God” are angels.
