I want to share with you a principle illustrated by a story from God’s Word: Fear always sees the mountain, but faith sees the mountain mover!
Fear always says, “It is impossible!” Faith always says, “With God, all things are possible!” You can know if a person is filled with faith or dominated by doubt simply by listening to the words that he speaks.
In Numbers chapter 13, there is a story that all of God’s people should know and understand. God had promised to give the land of Canaan to His people. He delivered them from the slavery of Egypt and performed many miracles to sustain them on their journey, and even gave them victory in battle to strengthen their faith. But, when the time came for them to walk in their own faith, they failed the test.
This is what happened. Twelve spies were sent in to spy out the land and bring a specific report to Moses and the people. After spending 40 days in the land, they returned. They carried samples of the fruit of the land. They said, “The land flows with milk and honey!”
In other words, “Just like God said, it is a great land.” But then they shared this: “There are obstacles in the land! Great walled cities! Fortresses! We even saw giants in the land!” Two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, spoke up and said, “Let’s go! We can take the land. We are well able to possess this land!”
But then, the other ten spies said, “We can’t do it! We are not able! They are stronger than we.” And get this: they responded to the sighting of the giants by saying, “We are just grasshoppers compared to them. As we are in our own sight, so we are in their sight!” In other words, what they thought and said about themselves they became in the eyes of the enemy.
What a tragedy. These were God’s people! They were talking about the land that He had promised to give them. He had proved Himself many times in the past few months. But what they said was, “We can’t! God can’t!” I have never seen anyone accomplish anything while saying, “I can’t!” You will never accomplish anything while saying, “I can’t!”
We must learn to believe that God can. We must learn to say, “God can.” We must overcome fear and stop seeing the obstacles and the mountains. We must live in faith and focus our spiritual eyes upon the mountain mover! If God says “I can,” then I will say, “God can!”
As a result of the unbelief and their words of contempt against God, that faithless generation died in the wilderness. For every day that they spied out in the land (which was 40 days), they wandered a year in the wilderness (which was 40 years).
Their possessing of Canaan was delayed 40 years because of their doubt and the words that came out of their mouths. I believe I want to line up my thought life and my words with what God is saying. I want to have a good report come out of my mouth. I do not want to be delayed 40 years in receiving God’s blessings in my life, I want to agree with Him now!
If you will allow God to change your faith and change your words, you can look beyond your mountains and see the mountain mover! Fear always sees the mountain, but faith sees the mountain mover.
If you will focus your eyes and your attention upon the mountain mover, you can escape the mouth trap!
