“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord” (2 Peter 1:2 KJV).
It is vital to have a real knowledge of God. If you want to learn about another person, first of all, you want to find out their history. Secondly, you need to understand that person’s culture. The third point to consider is their ability to talk and communicate over an extended period of time. Finally, observe that person’s actions over an extended period of time. Do their words match their actions?
Much of this is true about getting to know God. Learn God’s history. Study and learn His past by studying both the Old and New Testaments. Much of God’s history is found in the Old Testament. By reading the Old Testament books, you will see how God interacted with His people in those days.
By reading God’s history, you will come to know God’s culture. You will understand how He acts and why some things are the way they are today. We know what God’s culture is. He is holy – period!
Another way to get to know God is by spending time in communication with Him. He communicates to you through His Word, then you communicate with Him through prayer. By communicating with the Lord over an extended period of time, you will come to know Him. Observe His actions and learn how He works through time.
People always ask, “How do you know the voice of God?” Just the way you get to know the voice of anybody else. If you hang around a person long enough, you will learn their voice. It’s the same with God. I don’t have to see my wife to know when she is in the room. I can just hear that voice and I know it’s Deborah. We’ve been together for over 20 years, so I know her voice well.
In the same way, I have learned about the flow of the Holy Ghost by seeing how He has moved over the years. There are certain things I can just see happening. I don’t have to hear the Lord speaking to me; I just know what is coming next because I know how He moves at times.
So take these things to heart. Spend time in the Word of God and get to know Him; and you will experience greater grace and peace in your life.
