The Bible doesn’t just say we ought to do the miracles Jesus did. It doesn’t just say we ought to preach good messages like He did. It says we should walk like He did. We should put one foot in front of the other and live every moment of our earthly lives the very same way that Jesus did.
“But, Lynne,” someone might say, “we don’t really know the details of how Jesus lived. We don’t know exactly how He accomplished the things He did.”
Yes, we do.
Jesus told us. He said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise” (John 5:19 KJV).
That is such an amazing statement that we might be tempted to assume that Jesus was exaggerating a little. We might think He meant to say that He couldn’t do the hard things—the miracles, signs, and wonders—on His own.
But, no. Jesus said just what He meant and He repeated it again and again. He said:
• “I can of myself do nothing ….” (John 5:30)
• “My teaching is not My own, but His Who sent Me.” (John 7:16 Amp)
• “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” (John 6:38)
• “And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.” (John 8:29)
• “… whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” (John 12:50)
It’s astounding but it’s true. Jesus lived His entire life in total dependence upon His Heavenly Father. He did only what He saw His Father do. He said only what He heard His Father say. He spent every moment of His life responding to God.
Scripture Reading: John 5:1 – 30
On the chilly March night in 1972 when Lynne Hammond took her first step into a life of Spirit-led prayer, she had no idea what was about to happen. All she knew was the hunger in her heart for God wouldn’t let her sleep. In the few short months she’d been born again, her desire to fellowship with Him had grown so strong she could hardly contain it. “Help me, God!” she cried. “I want to know you. I want to be able to talk to you. Please, teach me to pray!”
Suddenly, a heavenly presence flooded the room. Lynne sensed waves of spiritual fire sweeping over her and a beautiful language began to flow like a river from within her. Although she’d never heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, she knew instantly, without a doubt—this was God!
What began that night soon blossomed into a life of prayer that ultimately became a ministry of prayer when, in 1980, Lynne and her husband, Mac, founded Living Word Christian Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Under Lynne’s leadership, the prayer ministry at Living Word has become an internationally recognized model for developing effective pray-ers in the local church.
A teacher and an author, Lynne publishes a newsletter called Prayer Notes, has written numerous books, and currently serves as the national prayer director for Daughters for Zion. Her passion for inspiring and leading others into the life of Spirit-led prayer continues to take her around the world to minister to believers whose heart cry, like hers, is “Lord, teach me to pray!”
