With all this talk about divine purpose, I can almost hear you thinking, Okay, Lynne, I can’t stand the suspense anymore. Tell me what my purpose is!
Sorry to disappoint you, but I can’t.
Sure, I could give you a general, scriptural idea. I could point you to the New Testament which says you’ve been destined and appointed to live for the praise of God’s glory. You’re called to be a light to the world. You’re predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ.
But those are only broad guidelines. The fact is that God has a specific and detailed purpose and plan for you. It’s as unique as you are, and nobody on earth knows what it is.
“Well, how am I going to find out about it then?”
You’ll find out about your purpose the same way Jesus found out about His. He wasn’t born knowing all about His destiny. He didn’t know as a toddler that He was foreordained to work signs and wonders and reveal the nature of God. He didn’t know as a little boy that He was called to bear the sins of mankind on the cross at Calvary.
No, Luke 2:52 says He grew and increased in the knowledge of those things. And Jesus Himself told us how that increase came. He said, “… I have seen and learned at my Father’s side …” (John 8:38 Amp)
Dear believer, you are going to learn about your destiny the same way—at your Father’s side. You will discover it in times of fellowship with Him.
Scripture Reference: Luke 2:40 – 52
On the chilly March night in 1972 when Lynne Hammond took her first step into a life of Spirit-led prayer, she had no idea what was about to happen. All she knew was the hunger in her heart for God wouldn’t let her sleep. In the few short months she’d been born again, her desire to fellowship with Him had grown so strong she could hardly contain it. “Help me, God!” she cried. “I want to know you. I want to be able to talk to you. Please, teach me to pray!”
Suddenly, a heavenly presence flooded the room. Lynne sensed waves of spiritual fire sweeping over her and a beautiful language began to flow like a river from within her. Although she’d never heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, she knew instantly, without a doubt—this was God!
What began that night soon blossomed into a life of prayer that ultimately became a ministry of prayer when, in 1980, Lynne and her husband, Mac, founded Living Word Christian Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Under Lynne’s leadership, the prayer ministry at Living Word has become an internationally recognized model for developing effective pray-ers in the local church.
A teacher and an author, Lynne publishes a newsletter called Prayer Notes, has written numerous books, and currently serves as the national prayer director for Daughters for Zion. Her passion for inspiring and leading others into the life of Spirit-led prayer continues to take her around the world to minister to believers whose heart cry, like hers, is “Lord, teach me to pray!”
