“For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.”
The qualities referred to here are faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. God doesn’t really cut us any slack when it comes to having any of these characteristics of His divine nature in us.
God expects us to be in the process of adding these things to our life and character. Line upon line and percept upon percept is how He does it. Here a little and there a little. Whether we embrace the purification of our sins or not is tied to the reality of this process.
The Message Bible says: “Without these qualities you can’t see what’s right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wiped off the books.”
If we struggle with believing that our sins are forgiven and forgotten, it is tied to the lack of these qualities in us. We don’t always see that connection, but that’s how God sees it.
We are to stay faithful to Jesus and grow in our partaking of the benefits He provides. God doesn’t expect us to be perfect, just participating.
I make growing in the qualities of God’s divine nature a high priority in my life.
