Peace

by Dwight Thompson | Uncategorized

A peaceful man has peace with God, man, and himself.

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trust in you” (Isa. 26:3).

The source of peace is God, not myself. It never is my peace but always His, and if once He withdraws, it is not there.
– Oswald Chambers

In Jesus’ time the “Peace” salutation was the ordinary way of saying a casual “hello” or “goodbye.” One said “Peace be with you” as casually as you and I might say “so-long.”

But like the word “good-bye” (which is a corruption of the phrase, “May God be with you”) the word “peace,” was rich in depth of meaning.

Indeed, the Hebrew word for peace, “shalom,” is so rich in meaning that it cannot be adequately translated into a single English word. In one sense, shalom means “to be complete, whole, sound.”

These are quiet words, suggesting a spirit of serenity, or tranquility. But shalom also means “to live well,” a lively phrase, suggesting a spirit of vitality.

“Shalom” is prosperity, good health, a complete state of well being, of the individual and the community, in the material sense and in the spiritual sense. It signifies good relations between individuals, between families, but especially between God and man.
