“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34-35).
What are God’s statutes and commandments under the new covenant? In this Scripture, Jesus gives us one new commandment – that we love one another.
Under the old covenant, God said if we would keep His ordinances, statutes and commandments, He would take sickness from our midst (Ex. 23:25). Similarly, 1 John 3:22 says that because we keep God’s commandments, we receive what we ask of Him. So we see that the same restrictions that applied under the old covenant apply now.
Under both covenants, God says, “I’ll take care of you and bless you and cause you to walk in health, if you will keep My commandments.”
In the Old Testament, God’s people had many statutes, commandments and ordinances to obey. In the New Testament, God condenses all His statutes, commandments and ordinances into one commandment and calls it love.
Romans 13:10 says, “…Therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” As we walk in love, we fulfill all of God’s other commandments.
I will walk in love toward others in every situation. As I obey the commandment of love, my Father takes sickness away from me and I live in divine health.
