Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
If Jesus had had to offer Himself every year, as they offered bulls and goats, He would have suffered many deaths since the creation of the world. But instead, He offered Himself once and for all. He is the sacrifice that did away with sin.
The Message Bible says: If that had been the case, he would have to sacrifice himself repeatedly throughout the course of history. But instead he sacrificed himself once and for all, summing up all the other sacrifices in this sacrifice of himself, the final solution of sin.
What does it mean to us that He was manifested to put away sin by His sacrifice? It means that, for those who accept Him, when we are asked to give account of all our wrongdoing we simply say that Jesus has saved me, Jesus has freed me. My sin problem is solved. We now have complete confidence because Jesus is our final answer.
Because Jesus put away sin and I am free from its power, so today I will act like it.
