“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps. 118:24).
Which day is this verse talking about? Is it confined to one isolated day in human history?
The “day which the Lord hath made” began with the day of creation when morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy” (Job 38:7).
Another day of rejoicing occurred when Israel was led out of bondage in Egypt. David spoke of this day, saying of the Lord, “He brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness” (Ps. 105:43).
That was a day of joyful deliverance. But it was not the only one. The day of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead is also included in this verse. The anguish of the disciples, the sorrow of the women, the heavy gloom of the crucifixion – all this was replaced by the joy of an empty tomb. “Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the (risen) Lord” (John 20:20).
Other days of rejoicing are the day of our own personal conversion, the day set aside each week to worship in the house of the Lord, and the day the Lord returns to claim his Bride, the Church.
Besides all these special days, let us remember that this age is often referred to as “the Gospel days.” It is a day of God’s making and its blessings are ours because our Lord has been placed as the head of the corner.
So therefore every day we live is the Lord’s day and is a cause of joyous celebration!
