You might say, “I’d be happy if I could just have a new car.” Well, that’s great if you have a new car…there’s nothing wrong with that, but a new car won’t bring happiness.
Others would say, “Oh, if I could only have more money and make more money…then I would be happy.” Well, there is nothing wrong with having money, as long as money is not your god, but I know lots of people that have money, but are not happy.
WHY then do the famous and the rich that we read so much about often take their lives? If fame and fortune could bring happiness, why do some of the rich and famous commit suicide?
I’ll tell you: they are not happy.
You know why? Because your soul cannot eat money; it cannot eat things. That’s why the rich man said “Oh, I am so rich…I’m going to pull down all of these barns and I’m going to build bigger ones and I’m going to put all my crops in there and I’m going to sit back and say to my soul, ‘Soul, take thine ease for thou hast much goods laid up.'”
And you know what Jesus said to him? “You’re a fool. This night your soul is going to be required of thee, and then, whose will these things be?” It’s nothing! Absolutely nothing!
It’s worthless, but when you have Jesus Christ in your heart…YOU ARE RICH!
Someone might say, “Well, you know, serving the Lord is going to be too hard.”
WRONG! I’m not going to tell you that it’s going to be easy, but it’s not going to be nearly as hard as trying to live without God, because the Bible says, “The way of the transgressor is hard.”
Jesus said, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” His commandments are not grievous because love lightens the load!
