It has been said many times that God doesn’t show favoritism. But actually, nothing could be further from the truth! Although it is true that God loves all equally, He does favor certain people. The Bible is clear that His eyes are looking across the earth for someone, anyone, whose heart is loyal to Him so He can show Himself strong on his or her behalf (1 Chronicles 16:9).
God longs to show Himself strong on behalf of His own family members. Nevertheless, some people are left to deal with their problems while others find His help. Some are passed over while others are visited by His supernatural provision and blessing.
Of course, God’s blessings and benefits are meant to be enjoyed by everyone. What makes the difference is a matter of faith and obedience. God favors those who will live by His Word and yield to His authority.
The same principle applies to the kingdom of darkness. The destructive fruit of Satan’s wicked plans will pass over some and land on others. Even good people fall prey to terrible things that could have been avoided if they had only followed God’s plans and received His promises.
The book of Exodus relates one of the most dramatic events in history, the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt, and that event depicts this very principle. The Passover that has been celebrated for thousands of years began with Israel facing a dark night of terror as death fell on Egypt and on all who would ignore God’s demand.
On that dark night, thousands of people fell. Yet on that same night, millions of people were delivered from death. Why did some die and others live? God instructed His people to mark the doorposts of their houses with the blood of an animal sacrifice. Those who followed God’s command were the ones who were delivered.
God instituted the first Passover while Israel was still living in the dangerous and hostile land of Egypt. On that Passover night, every person in the nation of Israel was to remain indoors and prepare the Passover meal just as God described, sprinkling the doorposts of the house with the blood of a sacrificial lamb.
While the Israelites were eating their meal of the Passover lamb and unleavened bread with bitter herbs, the world around them paid the price of their resistance to God. Deep meaning permeated every aspect of that night’s events. The lamb, of course, pointed to Him whose blood would one day be sprinkled on the heavenly mercy seat for the protection, safety, and deliverance of God’s people.
It was on this Passover night that God separated Israel as His own special people and they truly embraced their identity as His nation. The Passover meal sealed their new consecration. Their outward separation from Egypt would be accompanied by an inward separation from everything Egyptian or contrary to God.
The blood of the Passover lamb provided the substitute for the shedding of their own blood in consecration to God. The life found in the blood had to be given to defeat death. Thus, each Israelite family sacrificed an animal to bring the entire household under the cover of the life that was in that blood.
Of course, all of this was a prelude to Jesus’ giving His blood to defeat sin and death once and for all. As a result, His sacrifice demands that the power of death, disease, and destruction pass over us.
