One time I got so mad at God. He made me say something in the middle of my preaching that I never would’ve said on my own in a million years. I was preaching loud and hard in Vacherie, Louisiana, and I kept walking back and forth in front of these two couples on the front row. My God, it was a Holy Ghost night!

I was preaching away and walking and back and forth in front of these two couples, and then I just stopped. Now, as I said, I would never do what I did next, but God fooled me. He made it come out of my mouth before my mind could hear what I said. I looked at one of those women on the front row and said, “You, lady, are committing adultery with that man right there!”

Well, the pastor jumped up and said, “Oh, let’s pray here! Let’s pray!”

I stopped preaching, and everybody looked at me. All I could think was, Get me out of here now! I couldn’t believe I had just accused these people of committing adultery! But I knew the voice of God, and I knew what I told that woman was from Him.

That woman and her husband both jumped to their feet in shock. Then the man that I had pointed to jumped to his feet. Three of them were standing by then – only the man’s wife remained seated – and all four of them were looking straight at me.

I didn’t say another word. The only sound we could hear was the pastor’s prayer language coming from the back of the church. And they didn’t sound like regular tongues either. I thought, Son, he’s done gone into Indian dialects! This is bad!

I thought, That’s it! It’s over! I guess five seconds went by like this while those couples stood there looking at me, but it seemed more like five hours. I just looked at them, but I wanted to tell them, I didn’t say that. God said that. That isn’t my fault – lay this one on God! Don’t lay this on Jesse!

After what seemed like an eternal silence with those four people looking at me, the first woman finally spoke up and said, “It’s true. What you said about us is true.” Then the man whom I’d pointed to confirmed it, saying, “Yeah, we’ve been wife swapping for three years.”

Those people confessed! They confessed their sin in front of the whole church. All four of them had been involved in adultery, and the Lord knew it. I didn’t know it, but God knew it and they knew it. They probably had a lot of guilt on their heads, but after they confessed, they knelt down and gave their lives to God. Oh, it was a great time. It caused revival in that church.

Now, let me tell you what I did. I left the service that night, got to my hotel room and said, “God, come here. I want to talk to you, God. Don’t ever do that again! Never! I almost had a heart attack when You did that!” Here I was telling God what to do, like I was some kind of big shot! I said, “Why did You make me do that?”

God said, “They repented.”

“Yeah,” I said, “but if You want to talk about adultery in front of a church, You tell them Yourself! Leave me out of this situation. Or let me say something like, ‘I think there is a person here who has committed adultery.’ But don’t make me stick my finger in somebody’s face and call him an adulterer!”

I mean, I got mad at God. I thought God had pulled a fast one on me, but He wasn’t worried about that. He said, They repented! And you’re growing, Jesse.

“I don’t want to grow like this!” I growled.

Let me tell you what God was saying to me. He was telling me that I had been to the Holy of Holies, that I had gone beyond John’s baptism and into a deeper revelation of God.

Then He went on to tell me, Whatever I do is fine. And don’t you ever correct Me again!

“You have to understand us, Lord,” I replied. “We’re just little, bitty people down here. Do You understand?”

You see, we need to cooperate with God and learn to trust Him. It will sometimes stretch us, but God always knows what we can handle. For quite a few years after that experience, a lot of powerful things would begin to begin to happen, and I would say, “Come on, God. Let’s move.”

Sometimes He’d say, “No, no, you can’t handle that.”

But I reminded God that He had told me I’d moved into a deeper revelation and that I wanted more of Him. Sometimes God would move the way I thought He would, and sometimes He didn’t. God always knows the best way to get through to His people. Sometimes ministering to others requires us to take risks, acting by faith in God that what we’re saying is really Him.

God told me, If you’re going to walk like I walk and talk like I talk, you’ve got to live dangerously, son. Christians have always had to live dangerously.

By the way, the night after I accused those couples of committing adultery, we had a packed church. You couldn’t have gotten one more person inside that place. It was packed out, man. People were standing around, because there weren’t enough seats to sit in.

The funny thing is, nobody sat on that front row! Stay away from that front row! It’s dangerous up there.
