How important is the outward appearance of man to God?
The outward appearance of man is of no importance to God. He doesn’t judge us by our outward appearance, but by our inward heart or soul.
A great biblical example is King Saul versus King David. Saul was a physical masterpiece of strength, but David was not big or strong at all.
And he had a son whose name was Saul, a choice and handsome young man. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.
(1 Sam. 9:2)
Saul was appointed king and failed miserably. God then told Samuel, the prophet, to anoint another king. Notice what He told him before He showed him that David would be the new king.
“But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart'” (1 Sam. 16:7).
When God rejected Saul, He let everyone know that he was going to look for a man who was after His own heart and not a physical marvel.
And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
“But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”
(1 Sam. 13:13-14)
Thank God for attractive people, but it is not our appearance that makes us valuable; it is what is in our heart.
