“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” (Heb. 12:2 NKJ).
The word translated looking in this verse is very interesting. In the original Greek text it is aphorao (af-or-ah’-o) and has to do with attentive and concentrated vision. One translation of this phrase reads: “…simply fixing your gaze upon Jesus….” Another renders it: “…having eyes for no one but Jesus….”
The use of aphorao by the writer of Hebrews emphasizes that we Christians are to turn our attention away from all the distractions of this world and to focus our eyes on the most important thing in our life. This indicates more than loyalty. More than respect. More than devotion. It means looking to our sole source of supply because nothing else on earth is more deserving of our full attention.
An Olympic runner keeps his eyes glued on the finish line. A soldier in the field constantly looks to his commanding officer for direction. A musician keeps his attention trained on the conductor. A motorist carefully watches the gestures of the traffic policeman. Two lovers may be in a crowd of people, but they only have eyes for each other.
This verse tells us that we believers are to concentrate our gaze upon the Lord. We are to look unto Him as the only One Who can direct our lives. He is our fulfillment, our source of satisfaction. He leads us, directs us, and – most of all – sees us through every situation of life. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He is with us from start to finish.
