Hidden Riches Are Waiting

by Lynne Hammond | Devotions for the Praying Heart

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
1 Corinthians 2:9 – 10

Now, more than ever, God has some deep things He wants to reveal to us. He has hidden treasures He wants to give. We have reached the end of this age and He is ready to take us from glory to glory. He is ready to release to us deeper revelations, greater manifestations of power, and higher demonstrations of the Spirit.

But we must draw them out!

If you haven’t thought much about this idea of spiritual drawing, you might be wondering why I’m making such an issue of it. “Now, sister Lynne,” you might say, “Proverbs 20:5 is just one tiny verse. Aren’t you emphasizing it a little too strongly?”

No, because drawing isn’t mentioned only in that one verse. You can see it all through the Bible. Look in John chapter four, for example, where Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well and think about what that woman came there to do.

She came to draw water.

Jesus capitalized on that fact and centered His conversation with her around drawing water from wells—both natural and physical. Consider the situation for a moment. Physically, Jesus had come to Jacob’s well. He was tired and thirsty so He sat down there. He was sitting on a source of natural refreshment but He could not access it. He was sitting on the very thing which can help and relieve Him, yet it wasn’t doing Him any good.

Now we know that you don’t ever come to a well just to sit on it. You don’t come just to look at it or talk about it. You always come to a well to draw from it. So when the Samaritan woman came along with her bucket, He asked her to draw out some water for Him. Then He began to talk to her about the water of the Spirit He came to earth to give and said, “… whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (verse 14).

Notice that Jesus likened the well of the Holy Spirit that springs up in the heart of a believer to the natural well there in Samaria. He said that as born again people, we have a well on the inside of us. That well is a source of strength, joy, wisdom, knowledge, and counsel. In that well is everything we need.

But we have to draw on that well to access those things. We must be like the wise man in Proverbs and draw them out!

On the chilly March night in 1972 when Lynne Hammond took her first step into a life of Spirit-led prayer, she had no idea what was about to happen. All she knew was the hunger in her heart for God wouldn’t let her sleep. In the few short months she’d been born again, her desire to fellowship with Him had grown so strong she could hardly contain it. “Help me, God!” she cried. “I want to know you. I want to be able to talk to you. Please, teach me to pray!”

Suddenly, a heavenly presence flooded the room. Lynne sensed waves of spiritual fire sweeping over her and a beautiful language began to flow like a river from within her. Although she’d never heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, she knew instantly, without a doubt—this was God!

What began that night soon blossomed into a life of prayer that ultimately became a ministry of prayer when, in 1980, Lynne and her husband, Mac, founded Living Word Christian Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Under Lynne’s leadership, the prayer ministry at Living Word has become an internationally recognized model for developing effective pray-ers in the local church.

A teacher and an author, Lynne publishes a newsletter called Prayer Notes, has written numerous books, and currently serves as the national prayer director for Daughters for Zion. Her passion for inspiring and leading others into the life of Spirit-led prayer continues to take her around the world to minister to believers whose heart cry, like hers, is “Lord, teach me to pray!”
