“Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”
“You are no longer a slave” refers to a couple of special viewpoints. First, we are no longer a servant of God, but the Father has adopted us and we are now His sons and daughters. Our relationship has changed and therefore our duties change also. We now carry on the Father’s business with Him, building the company up and inheriting the Father’s reward.
The Message Bible says: “Doesn’t that privilege of intimate conversation with God make it plain that you are not a slave, but a child? And if you are a child, you’re also an heir, with complete access to the inheritance.”
Secondly, we are no longer slaves to sin and darkness. We are now the children of God and we bear the Father’s resemblance, in goals, values, character and purpose. We are heirs to all that God has. We are indeed richly blessed.
I’m a child of God and an heir to His fortune both now and in times to come.
