Super Man, Spirit Man

When I was a boy, my hero was Superman. I often pretended to be like him. Imagining I was Clark Kent, I would get Mama’s longest towel, shake it out real good, flip it back around and tie it under my neck.

Then I would get up on top of something, usually the chest of drawers, make sure my cape was ready, hold up my arms, and loudly proclaim, “Da dum da dum da dum…here I am, faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.”

I was all primed for the moment, up, up and away! At least, I thought so! But soon it was down, down in dismay! I still have a scar today to prove it!

It is one thing to play like Superman, and another thing to be him. When it finally dawned on me I would never really be Superman, I realized I would have to settle for being just a mere man. But then I discovered God’s plan, and found out I could be much more than just a mere man. God had a not-so-secret identity for me.

When Jesus calmed the stormy seas, His disciples exclaimed, “What manner of man is this!” (Luke 8:25). Jesus had told them to go across the lake, but the nasty weather conditions caused fear to rise up in them and they forgot His words.

Often in our situations, even when we have heard the Word, stormy circumstances arise. When that happens we can unwittingly enter the danger zone. And the danger is we might allow our faith to be overcome by fear. We can forget what manner of men we really are. If we allow that to occur, then we are mere man.

Jesus knew who He was! He knew and operated in His authority and realized His supernatural abilities. A storm was not about to keep Him from accomplishing His goals. He was a SUPERNATURAL MAN and He knew it.

What about us? Are we destined to be just mere men? Is there a new identity for us? Let us examine what God’s Word says about us. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

New “creatures” – did you know that another way of saying “new creature” would be “a brand new species”? We are no longer mere men, but supernatural men, exactly like Jesus.

We got that way by being born again of a supernatural God. Being born again by the Spirit of God puts us in a different dimension, a new level, a league by ourselves. We truly have a new identity.
