“Not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
God is so good to us. By His mercy He saved us. We couldn’t influence God to be favorable to us by any works of our own righteousness. God has washed us with the power of the Holy Spirit. He gave us a new birth and a fresh beginning. It is the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives that brought us this most excellent salvation.
The Message Bible says: “He saved us from all that. It was all his doing; we had nothing to do with it. He gave us a good bath, and we came out of it new people, washed inside and out by the Holy Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit works regeneration in us. That means we get rejuvenated, rehabilitated, and restored. The continual, personal presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts is how God does it.
The rebirth of our nature and the ongoing impartation of His life is what the Holy Spirit does in us by the new birth. We are new creations.
I am saved, but not by any works that I have done, but simply by what God has done.
