What did Jesus mean when He said that we could build our house on a rock as opposed to sand?
Let’s examine that particular Scripture:
Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: And the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
Now everyone who hears these saying of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.
And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching.
(Matt. 7:24-28 NKJ)
Notice that both individuals had storms of destruction come against them. It is important to note that all Christians will have trouble in this life.
It’s equally important to note that the one who builds his house on the rock will not be destroyed by life’s troubles; he will emerge victoriously (2 Tim. 4:18). The way we build our house on the rock is by hearing the sayings of Jesus and doing them.
The foolish man heard the sayings, but he didn’t do them or put them into practice. It is not enough to hear the Bible; we must also practice what we hear.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22 NKJ).
We only hurt ourselves when we don’t put the Bible into practice in our everyday lives. In fact, we actually protect ourselves when we practice the Word of God.
