Does the Bible Foretell the Death of Jesus? Part 2

by Joseph Cameneti | Articles, Christian Living

Are there Old Testament prophecies (predictions) that foretold the death of Jesus?

Today, let’s examine the second of six prophecies.

Nearly one thousand years before Jesus, the Messiah, died on the cross, the psalmist prophesied that He would be given vinegar to drink. This is a very minute detail that God made sure would come to pass.

Without any doubt Jesus was the predicted Messiah of the Old Testament.

The Second Prophecy

Reproach has broken my heart, And I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none. They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
(Ps. 69:20-21)

The Fulfillment

And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
(Matt. 27:33-34)

Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”

And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.
(Mark 15:33-37)
